Amazon’s primary care arm, One Medical, has launched a suite of innovative AI tools aimed at reducing administrative burdens for healthcare providers. Leveraging AWS’s generative AI platforms, Amazon Bedrock and AWS HealthScribe, One Medical aims to streamline documentation and improve provider-patient interactions.
One of the standout tools, HealthScribe, enables One Medical providers to capture patient visit details in real-time. This system allows clinicians to review, modify, and finalize AI-generated notes before submitting them into the medical record, ensuring accuracy and enhancing workflow efficiency.
In addition to visit documentation, these AI-powered tools will also support medical record analysis. By reviewing and summarizing a patient’s historical data, including screening exams, lab results, and medication history, the system presents providers with a comprehensive overview that can aid in informed decision-making during appointments.
The new AI tools further facilitate patient communication by allowing care teams to craft personalized responses to patient messages. The AI can draft messages based on prior conversations, which can then be customized by staff before sending. Moreover, it can match patient inquiries with the most appropriate team member—whether a physician, pharmacist, or care coordinator—based on the nature of the request and team members’ areas of expertise.
Prakash Bulusu, Amazon Health Services’ Chief Technology Officer, noted the transformative potential of generative AI in healthcare, stating, “This is just the beginning. Our goal is to leverage AI to empower primary care teams by minimizing time-intensive administrative work, allowing providers to prioritize human-centered care. By applying AI to streamline records review, highlight care gaps, and automate non-clinical workflows, we can support providers in focusing on the essentials—creating meaningful connections and delivering exceptional care.”
Expanding Reach in Primary Care
The launch of these AI solutions coincides with One Medical’s recent partnership announcement with Cleveland Clinic, which marks the provider’s expansion into Northeast Ohio. Together, the organizations will offer convenient same-day and next-day primary and specialty care appointments, on-site lab testing, and virtual healthcare services. Over the coming years, they plan to assess regional demand to identify further opportunities for expansion, aiming to increase healthcare access for patients across the area.
Broader Context in Healthcare AI
The deployment of AI by One Medical aligns with a broader trend across healthcare, where digital transformation is essential for managing increasing patient loads and improving service accessibility. The global AI in healthcare market, valued at $11 billion in 2022, is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2030, driven by a rising need for solutions that optimize clinical and administrative workflows. Amazon’s approach with One Medical may serve as a model, highlighting how integrated AI can ease administrative workloads while enhancing patient care quality.
