The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes (JPSP) is seeking empirical submissions for a special issue titled “Generative AI and the Evolution of Human Relationships.” Human connections—whether between friends, romantic partners, family members, colleagues, social groups, or cultural communities—have always been central to human experience. However, the rapid advancement and increasing integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present new challenges and opportunities in how we form and maintain these relationships.
Generative AI has the potential to redefine the dynamics of human interactions, offering both promising innovations and complex disruptions. For instance, reliance on AI-driven diagnostic tools may impact the level of trust patients place in their healthcare providers, while the growing prevalence of deepfakes could erode trust across social and cultural divides.
Furthermore, AI algorithms designed to create “perfect matches” may alter the nature of romantic relationships, and increasing human-AI interactions in place of human-to-human connections could have unknown implications for both mental and physical health. These changes raise important questions about the future of human relationships and the potential risks and benefits that AI brings.
This special issue invites empirical research that explores the multifaceted impact of generative AI on interpersonal and intergroup relationships, including how AI may influence social bonds, communication patterns, and emotional connections.
Submissions are encouraged to take innovative theoretical approaches, offering fresh perspectives on how these technologies are reshaping the fabric of human relationships.
Submissions will be accepted between December 2, 2024, and February 28, 2025. Authors should ensure that their manuscripts comply with the submission guidelines for JPSP, available on the journal’s submission portal. For further inquiries, please contact the Section Editor, Sandra Murray.
This special issue aims to deepen our understanding of the complex interplay between human relationships and generative AI technologies, offering insights into how our social world might continue to evolve in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
