Melbourne-based Telix Pharmaceuticals has joined forces with Subtle Medical to integrate SubtlePET, an AI-powered imaging software, into Illuccix, Telix’s PET imaging agent for prostate cancer detection. SubtlePET, developed by California’s Subtle Medical, utilizes a deep-learning algorithm to potentially reduce PET scanning time by up to 75%, seamlessly integrating into existing imaging workflows across various PET scanner types.
Illuccix (TLX591-CDx), a Gallium-68-based radiopharmaceutical, enables PET scans of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) for prostate cancer patients. Approved by the FDA in December 2021, Illuccix enhances diagnostic precision in prostate cancer screening.
SubtlePET, which optimizes PET image quality with AI, received the CE mark in Europe and 510(k) clearance from the FDA in 2018. Telix’s CEO Kevin Richardson highlighted that the partnership with Subtle Medical enhances Illuccix’s value for both healthcare providers and patients, positioning Illuccix as a leading PSMA-PET agent known for its precision, quality, and operational efficiency.
According to GlobalData’s Medical Device Intelligence Centre, Telix is also advancing five other products focused on prostate cancer. Industry analysis from GlobalData reveals that the PET imaging systems market was valued at approximately $427 million in 2023, projected to grow to $547 million by 2033. The Gallium-68-based PET imaging agent market, valued at $8.9 million in 2023, is expected to reach $10.5 million by 2033. Additionally, GlobalData forecasts a $18.8 billion valuation for AI platforms in healthcare by 2027.
In 2023, Telix expanded Illuccix’s distribution to the Nordics through a partnership with Denmark’s Wiik Pharma and initiated a Phase III trial in China for patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer. This collaboration with Subtle Medical further positions Telix at the forefront of AI-enhanced imaging for prostate cancer care.
